In
Memory of
Dave
"Arch" Archuleta

Dear
Friends:
We
have lost a special member of our Decorative Arts family. Dave Archuleta
passed away Wednesday, February 6, 2008 from a brain tumor.
Anyone
that had the pleasure of knowing “Arch” would immediately recognize his
commitment to the pursuit of artistic excellence. Two local artists stopped
by Surfaces while Mike MacNeil was detailing a column in the shop. Arch
was deeply offended that these artists did not take the time to watch
Mike. As Arch said, “here is a Freeman of the Trade in person and
they are ignoring him!” He discussed auditing Designer Walls I when
I held the next class. Although he had taken the class elsewhere, he wanted
to know different approaches and up-to-date information. This love of
learning and pursuit of knowledge is what inspires me as a teacher. The
week of February 6 th was the DWI class Arch wanted to audit so his absence
was even more profound. I shared Arch's belief in continuing education
and the joy he gave me as a fellow artist with these new students.
Arch's
warmth and twinkle in the eye attracted a wide circle of friends. Ashley
and I were honored to help finish a faux job for Arch. Faux Finishers
Suzanne, Brenda, Michele, Sue, Barb, Julie, Jenny, Kris, and Heather all
worked to complete the project. More then this single job, Heather McDonald
has been the truest of friends. She sat with
Arch,
helped with daily tasks, and provided comfort to him and his family. Heather
gave Arch a picture of us “girls” taken at his project and because of
her, he knew our community cared. Arch's brother, Leonard, made sure beautiful
samples decorated the walls of Arch's room. Other patients marveled at
Arch's marble and wood graining amazed that the samples were “just paint.”
Arch's
memorial service is Saturday, February 16, 3:00 pm at the Kansas City
Baptist Temple located at Blue Ridge Cutoff and 54 th street in Raytown.
We will meet at Surfaces at 2:00 for those wishing to attend.
At a time when faux is so price driven,
Arch believed that education, professionalism and perfect execution would
always win the job. To honor his memory and keep his commitment to decorative
arts education, we are establishing a scholarship in Arch's name. Our hope
is to make funds available for both new and established students wanting
to pursue a professional faux finishing career. We are asking those who
knew Arch the best to establish the guidelines for grants allowing for study
locally and with other instructors. We will let you know details as the
scholarship is established.
